I am so proud to share this ‘baby’ of mine, no pun intended. This project was in my heart for a while, but I didn’t have time to do it the way I wanted to. So, thanks to the slowing down of my life, and mostly in my head, I finally can present this to you. This is Boy and Rabbit, 1814 by great Henry Raeburn, which I saw a while ago and wanted to create a similar photograph in the same style. It wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be.
At first I had to find the outfit. Ellie Pomianowski with EDIFY – Costumes and Set Design for Photography and Events helped me with this problem! She is awesome, she did everything for me, down to the smallest details!Ellie, thank you SO SO MUCH! 🙂
Then I had to find a rabbit… That took longer than I thought!! Thanks to Lisa with Painted Oaks Academy who let me borrow her precious bunny Pudding 🙂 Which matched pretty well! Then I had to let my son’s hair grow… So a couple of months later everything was ready!
Here is my version of this portrait.
Again, was much harder then I thought.. The bunny didn’t want to stay still, my son didn’t want to stay still! I tried to match the light too, which didn’t want to stay still 😛 But other than that I am happy. What do you think?
P.S. And a little teaser – I had to create a painting with my beautiful daughter too, so stay tuned, it is almost done.
P.P.S. My son got his haircut the next day. Now he looks like a boy again 🙂

I think your version speak to me a little better, and not because I know you and love you, but because Motya’s eyes are more expressive and because bunny looks more real. However, the original version reflects in it the olden days…while your VERY SKILLFUL and ARTISTIC version shows that it didn’t happen that long ago. (just my two cents).

Vikulya, I love you! Thank you dear! There is no way I am competing here, I am mimicking the best I can. That you for your comment, you are too sweet 🙂

I can see you in 10-15 years time showing this photo to Motya’s girlfriend, while Motya’s saying, “Momma, c’mon, stop it” 🙂 Then in 10 more years he will be showing to his kids and saying, “My beautiful momma did it.” 🙂

First of all , I am happy that you happy Tamara! Happy when anybody is excited and passionate doing something that brings them joy! You definitely achieved your goal “…to create a similar photograph in the same style”!
Here is my take on it : the “original” picture boy looks careless with a smile not left his face yet, taking a minute from his play to pose…and now-day boy has such a depth behind his eyes, no hint of a smile…very “philosophical” look for a child. He looks like a young Hamlet, Little Prince 😉 protectively holding the innocent animal -bunny… Unlike the “old-time” boy who is a natural part of an environment , the “new” boy (and a bunny ) is a “light in a darkness”- as the representation of a new generation that are able to see through all the lies and denial humanity living now…the way we continue to hurt ourselves, each other, the planet…and they will change the violent course of a human history, knowing what they know and following their heart.

Wow, Tamara! Where did it (my speech)come from?! Great power of art!
April 26, 2013, 3:30 pm
Wow, Natalya, you impress me every time with your comments! Thank you, dear, for such a deep philosophical comment!!
April 28, 2013, 11:09 am
I am so quick to dismiss the value of my own pictures: what good it’s for somebody? and lately ,looking at art I notice that (artist maybe not even intended that particular message) but something get’s stirred up and wakes-up in me, like I can see way dipper into what I am looking at. So cool! I did not sit and “think” of a reply on your “painting” it’s just came from somewhere and your picture was the door! For somebody looking at this picture can be the invitation to slow down and remember the childhood dreams, connect to inner child, for others to realize that time is just a concept and the boys, separated by centuries are so alike …etc. Wow! Art is magic! <3
April 28, 2013, 2:15 pm
Natalia, art is magic! And your art is soooooooooo magical! I lvoe your style (what I can see when you post it -not often!) Yes, people see what they want to see, or what touches their soul at this moment.. Thank you, dear, for starting this great conversation!
